Bentley is all set to upgrade its first ever SUV with a Speed edition and has plans to expand its lineup with more new models under development.

The automaker proudly unveiled their Speed variant at the 2016 Beijing auto show.

Wolfgang Durheimer, head of Bentley speaking during the Beijing show said that there is considerable demand for SUVs in China. The demand is soon going to rise to unprecedented heights and the brand is all set to meet such increase. They are not just going to launch the speed edition of the Bentayga but has couple of models planned to add to the SUV lineup. The auto expo proved that automakers are now increasingly interested in making a mark in the region where the world’s largest buyer group is.

While confirming that Bentley will cater to the Chinese buyers, Durheimer added that even though they are quite interested in changing their production decisions based on what people need, it won’t be the only deciding factor for all their future models. “The purchasing behavior syncs with our personal view at the moment and it makes it all the easier for us to launch our cars. The demand for SUVs is much higher throughout the world and in China,” he said.

The engineers at Bentley are busy trying to choose between a smaller SUV which will sit below the Bentayga and an EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept car. The concept was earlier showcased at the Geneva auto show last year and was received with much fanfare. The brand’s boss confirmed that there will eventually be Speed versions of the Bentayga available in China.

At present, the company offers a Bentayga powered by a 6.0-liter W12 engine. The powertrain is capable of producing 600 horsepower with 664 lb feet of torque. It is quite powerful on the road but there are much better models that are yet to get launched in the region. The car uses an eight speed automatic transmission system and can easily accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds.

Anti-corruption steps taken in China played an integral role in bringing down sales of Bentley cars because it targets the elite crowd in the country. Durheimer said that once the laws are withdrawn, they can expect much better sales. It is based on the government’s decision.

“Once everything is normal, we expect our sales to double here,” he said during the interview.
