Koenigsegg is not the average automaker who focus on daily commuting but rather an aggressive brand which never settles for less.
The company’s latest launch is the Regera supercar which is a direct competitor for the Bugatti Chiron.
The automobile manufacturer is known for pushing the boundaries of engines and the horsepower that they can render. They have keeping up the trend for decades which is why it is not easy to switch to an electrified car. Petrol engines are always the most preferred choice for supercars as they are highly capable of delivering what the buyers expect of them. A similar claim cannot be made about battery powered engines.
Inside sources claimed that Koenigsegg is working on a brand new 1.6-liter engine which is relatively small on paper but if built will be able to generate 400 horsepower. Such output from a meager design is a feat in the automobile industry which is what the brand wants to achieve, no matter what. They have already done some ambitious stuff like the 5.0-liter twin turbo V8 engine which renders 1,500 horsepower in the Regera. The car is also equipped with three different electric motors to make it an environmental friendly hybrid. Using multiple motors allow them to offer the same acceleration and torque when it switches to the alternative power source.
“Chinese carmaker Qoros is working with our brand so as to make this idea possible. The 1.6-liter engine with 400 horsepower or more is not easy task but we are going to apply the same idea used in the Agera and the Regera. The technology if successfully implemented in these smaller engines could produce astounding results and pave way for cheaper yet efficient powertrains,” said Christian Von Koenigsegg.
While the auto manufacturer has no plans to immediately use the engine in any of their vehicles for now, they are going to focus on researching and exploring the possibilities of using it. It may become mainstream in future models. FreeValve technology is another exclusive add-on which is expected to help Koenigsegg increase the efficiency of the engine by two to three percent.
The company’s head opined that using electric turbos is expensive and they are heavy to use. When the particular segment flourishes, they may consider using it. He added that the engineers have done their best to maintain an even balance between intake and exhaust to procure maximum heat through the combustion procedure.
