After much debate, Lamborghini Urus SUV has been confirmed to be the first plug-in hybrid car from the supercar manufacturer.
Brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin were not sure of adopting electric motors to replace of conventional petrol and diesel engines.
The times continued to change rapidly in the past few months that finally convinced Lambo to bring in a powerful plug-in hybrid model that has both an electric motor and a gas engine. The company in their announcement confirmed that it will be the only hybrid model and there is no word on expanding the lineup anytime soon. The announcement came from Maurizio Reggiani, the brand’s research and development head.
The latest model will further expand the Urus lineup which already has a model with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine. For a long time, there was no SUV from the automobile brand and they strongly focused on sleek, supercars. The last one was the LM002 released back in 1993, almost two decades ago. The platform on which the SUV is being built is the same as the Audi Q7 and the Bentley Bentayga. An active anti-roll suspension technology with 48W of power is equipped in the new Urus for added safety.
“As a SUV, the Lamborghini Urus plug-in hybrid requires lot of torque and in order to make it possible, we have made turbocharging compulsory. Being equipped by a large battery and an even larger chassis to pull, the quick charging tech allows the vehicle to be ready to hit the road again without wait time. It is much better than the original concept shown in 2015,” said Reggiani.
“While embracing newer technology is something the brand is always interested in, we always love to make super sportscar that allows the driver to feel every spark in every cylinder. The performance is simply unmatched and aspirated engines will always be our go to choice to deliver our vision,” he added.
The R&D head also said that Lamborghini Urus is one of the models that is designed to blend the best of aerodynamics, weight and power. The four wheel drive models will deliver more torque and always sport a significant difference when compared to rear wheel drive setup. A model like the Huracan LP580-2 can never be as fast it is without FWD system. However, Lamborghini will offer cars with varying configurations and wheel setup so that there is something for everyone in all categories.
