The TNGA is designed to simplify the car manufacturing process, while cutting production costs by 20%. The TNGA-based production is expected to give a more robust chassis and a lower center of gravity in future Toyota vehicles for improved handling. The new Prius is expected to compete with hybrid cars like Ford’ C-Max and Chevrolet’s Volt and all-electric vehicles like Kia Soul EV, Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.

The Toyota Prius 2016 is fitted with a more efficient gas-electric hybrid system and is expected to deliver mileage of 55-58 mpg, 10% more than its predecessor. Additionally, the new Prius is 20% more light-weight than the previous model. The gas motor will feature 1.8L 4-cylinder thermal efficient engine capable of delivering 148 horsepower.

Two battery options are expected to be available for buyers, one will feature an expensive lithium-ion battery with higher power capacity and another one will be a more economical nickel-metal-hydride battery. The battery pack also has been redesigned for enhanced efficiency and promises an all-electric range of 35 miles, far better than the previous model’s 11 mile range. The redesigned battery pack also contributes towards saving the weight of the vehicle.
