The MTV Video Music Awards 2015 was marked by many memorable events including the bizarre hosting by Miley Cyrus, revival concert by Justin Bieber and the caught-everyone-by-surprise joint musical gig by Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj.
In probably one of the most shocking incidents for VMA audience, Taylor Swift barged onto Nicki Minaj’s performance and the duo gave a rocking opening number, squashing rumors about the purported Twitter feud between the two celebrity musicians.
Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj performed the ‘Bad Blood’ number together, while Nicki Minaj also sang a medley of her hit songs including ‘Decked out in red sequins’ and ‘The night is still young’, Minaj’s performance thrilled the audience and fortunately for herself and the audience, she did not repeat the previous year’s ‘Anaconda’ faux pas, although the famed video won her the best hip hop video award this year. During her acceptance speech, the rap diva dissed out at Miley Cyrus, the show’s host, apparently to get back at the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer for insulting her at a recent interview.
‘The Weeknd’ performance of his ‘I Can’t Feel my face’ was a pyrotechnic gig prompting Taylor Swift (living up to her usual tradition) to dance in the audience. The ‘1989’ star was joined by many, including models Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid and singer Selena Gomez, all of whom performed in her ‘Bad Blood’ video which won two awards including video of the year. Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’ also won her two moon men that night.
Miley Cyrus, as the host of the show this year, seemed to outdo herself in her attempts at grabbing headlines. She did not hesitate to show off her outlandish behavior by flashing her breasts during the last moments of the show and then quipped cheekily to the audience, ‘the VMAs have not had a host in the last two years; a tradition they’ll probably return to immediately after tonight’s performance’.
In an attempted dig at Justin Bieber’s revival concert, which included his ‘flying’ act during the first public performance of his latest ‘What do you mean’, she also commented, ‘I was going to keep my jacket on, but now that I know that Justin Bieber can fly,’ and she zipped open her fur coat to reveal only a skimpy metallic leotard. As she closed the show, she spun another surprise on the audience saying she has released a new album which is available online for free.
Other performers for the awards night included Tori Kelly, Pharrell, A$Ap rocky with Twenty One Pilots and Demi Lovato with her summer hit ‘Cool for the summer’. The highest award of the MTV VMA 2015, the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, went to Kanye West. While making the presentation, Taylor Swift shared her childhood memories with the audience saying that the first iTunes purchase she made was as a 12-year-old when along with her brother she bought Kanye West’s ‘College Dropout’. Both Swift and West happily took digs at each other in allusion to an infamous interruption made by Kanye West during a Swift acceptance speech six years ago at the VMA.
