Fully electric cars are still a distant dream for an average buyer because the low cost models don’t deliver the much needed mileage while the ones made by Tesla are simply out of reach.
The upcoming budget sedan named Model 3 from Tesla could finally bring e-cars to the mainstream audience because at $35,000, it is almost the same price as an ordinary sedan that people would go for. But, the good news is, it is not going to be a hybrid or a plug-in, but a fully electric car that runs on a battery powered engine.
Tesla has revolutionized the world of e-cars with their luxury sedan, the Model S which is the most preferred choice for the elite buyers. The car has already sold in huge numbers in the U.S., UK and Europe. According to the company, it is the fact that the luxury sedans from Mercedes, BMW and Audi cost almost the same as a Model S, but they are conventional gasoline vehicles while the Tesla car sports a futuristic technology with great mileage to travel long distances.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla confirmed that the Model 3 is indeed coming and the pre-orders for the vehicle will begin in the month of March, 2016. However, the vehicles will not be delivered until 2017 because the manufacturer is yet to set up a Gigafactory to manufacture these cheap e-cars.
Musk also promised that even though the Tesla Model 3 is cheap, it will be capable of offering an impressive 320 kilometers on a single charge made possible by a powerful battery. Similar to Model S, there will be multiple variants of Model 3 to choose from, based on which the power and mileage will vary. It is expected to be a decent size that looks a lot like the BMW 3 series in terms of the legroom and spacing.
The production of the low cost sedan will begin in two years, once the Gigafactory required to produce batteries is setup and becomes fully operational. It is currently under construction in Nevada and Musk expects it to be ready by mid-2017. Meanwhile, Tesla’s Model X SUV is the happening vehicle scheduled for a launch in the U.S.
It’s an extremely powerful SUV capable of housing 7 people at once and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds. Buyers can customize the vehicle with a ludicrous mode that makes it even faster than the basic model.
